Working with hardened steel (HRC 50+) is always a challenge. The main danger here isn't just abrasive wear, but thermal damage. One wrong move and "heat tints" (burns) appear on the surface, signaling local tempering and the loss of the steel's mechanical properties.

How to process the part efficiently and safely? The Stark Abrasive experts share proven methods.

1. Choose "cold" abrasives

Standard aluminum oxide dulls quickly against a hardened surface, rubbing the metal instead of cutting it. This creates excessive friction and intense heat.

  • Solution: Ceramic grain (e.g., VSM XK870X or 3M™ Cubitron™ II).

  • Why it works: Ceramics are self-sharpening. Microcrystals break off during use, constantly exposing sharp edges. The result is a clean cut with minimal heat generation.

2. Control pressure and speed

More is not always better. When working with hard alloys, excessive pressure instantly overheats the sub-surface layer.

  • Tip: Use moderate, even pressure and ensure high belt speed. This allows the abrasive to "carry away" the heat with the chips before it penetrates the part.

3. Use additional cooling

If your machine setup allows it, grinding with a high-quality coolant (cutting fluid) is a 100% guarantee against burn marks.

  • Important: Special belt series (with a "Top Size" prefix) have an additional active coating that reduces temperatures in the cutting zone even during dry grinding.

How to tell if the metal structure has changed?

If you see bluish or brownish spots after grinding, it’s a sign of overheating. In these areas, the steel has become softer, meaning the tool or part will fail prematurely under load.
